Get Rid of Your MacBook Warranty Once and For All

What does a MacBook Pro, Sony Puppy FIU-600, and a Dremel have in common? Put those three together, and you end up with a destroyed MacBook a built-in thumb reader.

Needless to say, this mod isn't for the faint of heart. Even the modder himself accidentally scuffed the casing of his MacBook. This obviously voids your warranty, so don't try this at home.

Step 1: Cut a hole in the case:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Step 2: Do technical stuff to make it all work:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader
MacBook Pro Thumb Reader
MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Step 3: Check if the MacBook still works:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Step 4: MacBook, Meet Thumb Reader:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Not worth the effort!

Yeeeaaaahhh... then when it doesn't work... how do explain to the Mac store why I was cutting a hole in my MacBook Pro??? Because I'm Wile E. Coyote and I got this kit from ACME???

The guy who did this mod works as an Apple technician.

Ruins all. ACDT/ACPT

I'd rather just have a Pro that works and has a waranty.

I disagree. The fingerprint reader is a worthwhile feature, and one of the few black marks *against* a MBP when comparing against PC hardware.
"Not worth the effort?" Perhaps not, but Apple should include a fingerprint reader in the next gen MBP. (and a couple more USB ports)

Not going to do that to my beloveth macbook

You should have done this on a 17" Macbook Pro, it has wider grills.

Waste of time, who needs een fingerprintreader when you can identify yourself using a password. It might be "cool" but its unnesessary. and thats probably why it's not build in already

good concept... but poorly implemented

i like u chris

I think it could work but you would need a apple opener/wirer to do the connecting and who needs one biult in when you can get usb ones from most pc stores and one last thing who in the world has enough guts to do that with a R21,500 mackbook pro I definatly wouldn't

You know, some people take the web too seriously. Learn to laugh; learn to roll with it.

For the rest of you, I can only stare awkwardly.

And by the way, yeah, this mod isn't worth it, but it is so cool FTW!

What's the point! Mac OS X won't recognise the fingerprint reader. So you end up typing in the password anyway me thinks.

Like it.. but not going to do it on a MacBook Pro.... -.-

Well..
I dont know anything about computers :)

i think that is totally wicked!!!!!

useless mod... On many corporate computers (PC) we have to disable fingerprint readers since the often dont work with domain logon when having to change the domain password every 90th day.

Having this mod or feature on a Mac would have the same problem, it would have to be disabled do to problems with domain passwords and keyrings..

Otherwise on a personal Mac I wouldn't mind this feature..

honestly i think a retinal scanner would be more sufficient on a macbook using the isight....now that would be a kickass mod that i would do in a heartbeat

hi, i have a macbook pro and a Lenovo T61... and i use the fingerprint just for strong passwords for admin my DNS or exchange server.

but the password you must have in the head.. if you scratch you finger...

Man, i had to remove a bunch of thumb readers of fujitsu's. That mod is pointless. Find a better mod, before you go and rip your laptop apart. The holes look horrible cut like that.
